Outdoor Learning

Intent

At Palm Bay Primary School, we are committed to providing our pupils with a holistic education that extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. Our Forest/Beach School program is an integral part of our curriculum, fostering a deep connection with nature and promoting experiential learning. All children have access to a block of Forest/Beach school sessions throughout the academic year.

Our Forest/Beach School program is grounded in the belief that children learn best through hands-on experiences in a natural environment. We aim to nurture curiosity, creativity, and resilience in our pupils by offering regular opportunities for them to engage with the outdoors.

Implementation

  • Teaching Methods: Our Forest/Beach School sessions are led by trained practitioners who facilitate child-led exploration and discovery. We adopt a flexible teaching approach that adapts to the interests and needs of the children, encouraging independence and problem-solving skills.
  • Classroom Resources: Sessions take place in our designated forest area or down at the local beach, equipped with resources such as natural materials, tools for safe use, and weather-appropriate clothing to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Sequencing and Structure: The curriculum is structured around seasonal themes, allowing children to observe and interact with the changing environment. Each session begins with a focus activity, followed by free exploration time, and ends with reflection and sharing.
  • Assessment: We assess pupils' progress through observations and reflections rather than formal testing. This approach allows us to celebrate individual achievements and tailor future sessions to support continuous development.

Impact

Through the Forest/Beach School program, we aim to develop key life skills in our pupils, including teamwork, communication, and environmental stewardship. We believe that these experiences not only enhance academic learning but also contribute to the emotional and social well-being of our students.
